The Magna Carta

The Magna Carta changed history, and we still feel its impact today. This document was signed on this day in 1215 by King John of England.

 Like kings before him, John used English men and money to defend territory within France. But his campaigns were unsuccessful, and he was demanding greater taxes and additional military service.

 By 1204, King John had lost his possessions in northern France. When he tried to collect more money, many English barons revolted, and a civil war erupted.

In 1215, the two sides began to negotiate. The Magna Carta (which means “Great Charter”) was the result of these discussions.

 In this document, John made written promises that guaranteed important freedoms and rights for the people of England, and it limited the power of the monarchy. Many English legal traditions, including the right to trial by jury and equal access to courts for all citizens, had their origins in the Magna Carta. These protections later were incorporated into the United States Constitution.

This pioneering document was inspired when the people of England realized they had a choice: They could remain in bondage—or demand freedom.

There are strong parallels in the spiritual world, for the Bible tells us that God has given each of us choices. We can choose to be in bondage to sin, the flesh, and the world, or we can accept the freedom of serving Him.

Today, remember that you are God’s child. You can cry out to Him as your Father. Talk to Him. Tell Him your burdens and cares. Allow Him to give you freedom.
